FAQ
Why it's vital to keep anti-virus software up-to-date?
Anti-virus software can identify and block many viruses before they can infect your computer. Once you install anti-virus software, it is important to keep it up to date. Anti-virus software scans files or your computer's memory for certain patterns that may indicate an infection. The patterns it looks for are based on the signatures, or definitions, of known viruses. Virus authors are continually releasing new and updated viruses, so it is important that you have the latest definitions installed on your computer.
Help I have a virus!
Stay calm and don't change or delete anything from your computer. Write down on a piece of paper any information you know about the virus - for instance the name of the virus, or the exact messages that appear on the screen as a result of the virus, or the name of the email attachment that caused the virus. If you have anti-virus software installed, include its name and version.
Stop using your computer for anything. Using your computer after it is infected will often spread the infection, delete valuable data files and can seriously damage the operating system rendering the computer unable to boot up properly.
If this is a personally owned computer, or if it is located off campus, call the Information Technology Services Service Desk at 415-338-1420 for assistance. If your computer is owned by the university and is on campus, contact your local IT support or Information Technology Services to schedule an appointment with a consultant who can assist you with the problem.
Is it a virus or a hoax?
- If you receive email urging you to e-mail all your friends about a new virus, please DON'T! We have never seen a legitimate warning that includes a request to forward the mail to other people.
- Check McAfee's Threat Center Site or Symantec's Security Response site to research a particular virus or verify that an email is not a hoax. Many email warnings about viruses are effectively chain letters and do not refer to a true virus.
- McAfee's free McAfee Stinger includes virus removal for recent viruses that cannot be fixed by VirusScan.
- Network Associates' also provide important Support Notification Service (SNS) via RSS feed regarding recent computer virus outbreaks.
How do I check if I have the latest McAfee anti-virus software on Windows?

- From the McAfee VirusScan menu select About McAfee VirusScan.
- The entry for Engine Version indicates the currently installed version.

How do I update virus definitions on Windows?
Your computer must be connected to the Internet prior to starting a manual update.
- Log into an administrative account
- Save your data and then close any open applications
- If you are not already connected to the Internet, connect to the Internet now
- Right-click on the VirusScan icon located on the Windows system tray and select Update Now..
- VirusScan will check for new virus definitions and a new scan engine. Wait until the status shows Update Finished then click Close. This can take hours if you use a dial-up modem to connect to the Internet. Be patient.
- You may be asked to reboot your computer. If so, click Yes to reboot your system
For information on updating a computer that does not have a working Internet connection, please see the installation instructions.
How do I update virus definitions on Macintosh?
By default, VirusScan for Mac is set up to automatically check the McAfee Website for an updated DAT file everyday. If one is available, it will be downloaded and installed automatically.
How do I keep my anti-virus software current?
- If your computer has a constant connection to the Internet, or you use a dial-up modem to connect to the Internet, VirusScan is set to automatically update itself at the following times:
- When you log in to your account (If you are not prompted to log in when your computer starts then you are automatically being logged into your account)
- At approximately 12:30 PM
- At approximately 1:30 AM
- When you make a dial-up modem connection
- Note that VirusScan will not update if your computer is 'sleeping' or 'hibernating'. If you commonly use these modes in place of shutting down then you should shut your computer down completely at least once a week.
- If your computer does not have an immediate connection to the Internet when turned on, and you do not connect to the Internet using a dial-up modem, then follow the instructions for manually updating your virus definitions found in the installation instructions
- If you were unable to update your system during the installation process you should contact your local computer support or the ITS Help Desk for help
Where can I find anti-virus server software?
VirusScan can be installed on a server. However, server administrators should configure the program as is appropriate for their server. Information on what changes should be made can be found in the manual for each version of VirusScan.
-->Applies to: Configuration Manager (current branch)
Endpoint Protection manages antimalware policies and Windows Firewall security for client computers in your Configuration Manager hierarchy.
Important
You must be licensed to use Endpoint Protection to manage clients in your Configuration Manager hierarchy.
When you use Endpoint Protection with Configuration Manager, you have the following benefits:
- Configure antimalware policies, Windows Firewall settings, and manage Microsoft Defender Advanced Threat Protection to selected groups of computers
- Use Configuration Manager software updates to download the latest antimalware definition files to keep client computers up-to-date
- Send email notifications, use in-console monitoring, and view reports. These actions inform administrative users when malware is detected on client computers.
Beginning with Windows 10 and Windows Server 2016 computers, Windows Defender is already installed. For these operating systems, a management client for Windows Defender is installed when the Configuration Manager client installs. On Windows 8.1 and earlier computers, the Endpoint Protection client is installed with the Configuration Manager client. Windows Defender and the Endpoint Protection client have the following capabilities:
- Malware and spyware detection and remediation
- Rootkit detection and remediation
- Critical vulnerability assessment and automatic definition and engine updates
- Network vulnerability detection through Network Inspection System
- Integration with Cloud Protection Service to report malware to Microsoft. When you join this service, the Endpoint Protection client or Windows Defender downloads the latest definitions from the Malware Protection Center when unidentified malware is detected on a computer.
Note
The Endpoint Protection client can be installed on a server that runs Hyper-V and on guest virtual machines with supported operating systems. To prevent excessive CPU usage, Endpoint Protection actions have a built-in randomized delay so that protection services do not run simultaneously.
In addition, you manage Windows Firewall settings with Endpoint Protection in the Configuration Manager console.
Example scenario: Using System Center Endpoint Protection to protect computers from malware Endpoint Protection and the Windows Firewall.
Managing Malware with Endpoint Protection
Endpoint Protection in Configuration Manager allows you to create antimalware policies that contain settings for Endpoint Protection client configurations. Deploy these antimalware policies to client computers. Then monitor compliance in the Endpoint Protection Status node under Security in the Monitoring workspace. Also use Endpoint Protection reports in the Reporting node.
